Message Yes, a smaller diameter wheel is better suited for a variety of reasons. Besides the gearing aspect, you typically have lower rotating mass and overall lower wheel weight which helps quite a bit. More than people might imagine anyway.

As far as a a horsepower point where 18"+ wheels are a benefit, this really isn't the case. An 18" wheel isn't going to specifically give you a larger patch or anything of that sort. You can get whatever width you like (that will fit) on a 15/16" wheel and still it would be far better than the 18" wheel. Even taking things like weight and rotating mass out of the equation, you'll simply have more sidewall (and thus more sidewall flex) which is very important in gripping the track.

Short answer: Smaller diameter wheels are almost always better for drag racing.
